Placement Screening

Kindergarten Screening

The Kindergarten screening consists of five areas of development: Motor, Concepts, Language, Self-help and Social.  The tasks sample typical developmental behaviors that children can readily demonstrate.  Each area also provides a checklist of social/emotional behaviors that can be observed during the screening and is individually administered by one of the kindergarten teachers. The setting is a relaxed early childhood classroom in which many game-like activities occur simultaneously.  The content is based on competencies that kindergarten teachers indicate are necessary for success in regular classroom situations.

Acceptance into Saint Andrew’s Kindergarten is based on a combination of the screening results, preschool reports and, when needed, an interview with the parents.

First Grade Screening

First grade screening reviews skills from completion of Kindergarten.  The skills include printing upper and lower case alphabet and numbers 0-20, reviewing sounds and sight words, recognizing and ordering numbers to 20 and identifying different patterns and shapes.  The screening also assesses fine motor skills and includes listening to the child read or attempt to read.

Grades 2–7 Screening

Screening for placement in grades two through seven consists of various written and oral reading, math and writing activities designed to give the administration information which will help in placing the student at the appropriate instructional setting.  We use our own Reading (Open Court) and Math (Saxon) materials.
