WHAT'S COOKING IN SCIENCE CLASS?
Special Notice: All the scientific principles taught in our class are designed and maintained by God!

LIFE SCIENCE
5th grade science class jumped headfirst into "Life Science". In this unit, we studied cells, tissues, organs, vertebrates and invertebrates, classification of animals and plants, reproduction/genes/chromosomes, adaptations, and ecosystems. The DVD "Galapagos" and an occasional visit by Bill Nye contributed to the learning process.
+Mold Lab
Students' first lab was "Mold Lab". They observed the growth of mold (fungus) on tomato, grapefruit peel and bread. A somewhat smelly experience after a week.

FLORA AND FAUNA OF SAS CAMPUS
This out-of-the-book science unit involved learning about plants and animals around our campus/North Texas, internet research, computer training and Word document preparation. With the weather cooling a bit, we got started and went outdoors for some "excursions". Students then finished their "Landscape Maps". Block 1 was assigned the courtyard, Block 2 got the gym and kindergarden areas, while Block 3 went across the street to the sports fields.
Students also completed research of specific plants/animals and created Word documents on laptop computers. Along the way, they learned basic computer skills involving mouse techniques and keystrokes.

"So that's what a Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher looks like!"

+Dicot Seed Germination Lab
As part of the Flora and Fauna curriculum, students studied and observed the germination of dicot seeds.

HUMAN BODY
We have completed the human body part of our curriculum. The first section involved the respiratory and excretory systems. We also touched the heart and blood circulation. These were followed by lessons on communicable/non-communicable diseases, how to stay healthy, good nutrition, and the human eye. "Mythbusters" provided good advice on how to cover sneezes and coughs.

BARN OWLS!

Students' got their hands dirty! This special out-of-the-book study of the Barn Owl, along with an introduction to Birds of Prey and ornithology, lasted about three weeks during the third quarter. The lab portion provided every student the opportunity to investigate the contents of their own owl pellet. Identified animal bones were mounted and displayed for Catholic Schools Week.

A live owl from Fort Worth Nature Center visited science class to wrap-up this unit.

CHEMICAL REACTION!
Students studied basic chemistry during the third quarter. Such topics as elements, electrons, molecules, compounds and chemical formulas were discussed. To finish it off, teams conducted a chemical reaction lab.

ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY
As part of their study of energy, students investigated electrical conductivy.
