LEARNING THE HISTORY OF THE GREATEST NATION ON EARTH!
That's what we do in the 5th grade at St. Andrew Catholic School. We are rightfully proud of the good 'ol U.S.A. and enjoy learning about our noble, although occasionally imperfect, past. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

We have covered the geography of the U.S. This included such things as latitude, longitude, geographic terms (i.e. peninsula, gulf), and physical features (i.e. Rocky Mountains, Rio Grande).

This overview of geography was closely followed by a study of the first Americans ... the Native Americans. The migration routes of these brave souls, the environment they faced, and how they adapted were discussed. The "Cultural Regions", such as the Northwest Coast, the Southwest, and the Great Plains were included along with the tribe names and their corresponding artifacts.

"Why Europeans Left for the New World" ... what were they thinking? The explorers who came to claim the New World, such as Christopher Columbus and Jacques Cartier, have been covered. We have also studied the early English settlements and the original colonies. These were followed by chapters on "Facing Slavery", and "Colonial Williamsburg", "The Declaration of Independence", The Revolutionary War", and "The Constitution" as we move toward "Manifest Destiny" and "The Civil War".

One important reminder here for students, the History Alive online tutorial will help you study for the tests. Here's a handy link: History Alive Tutorial.

They have also viewed programs such as The Three Stooges, Jack BennyBob Hope, The Flying Nun, F Troop, and Abbott & Costello.

EARLY ENGLISH SETTLERS "ACT-IT-OUT"

THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR
Our history book describes the 1775-1883 Revolutionary War as a "tug-of-war". So what did we do? We got a long rope and had some competition between the Redcoats and the Continentals. The good guys won, of course.
