Week of May 14-18

Students will bring home graded work on Monday. Parents should look over these papers, and send back any that say, "Sign and Return".

This week we are having the last story in our reader.  It is "Jalapeno Bagels", pages 362-373.  Students need to read and discuss the story at home, and also go over any new vocabulary words.

On Monday a Crossword Puzzle will come home to complete using the Reader.  It will be due on Wednesday.  No Coupons are allowed for this paper.  

Week of May 7-11

Students will bring home graded work on Monday to look over with a parent.  Any "sign and return" papers are due back on Tuesday.  

A Homework Sheet is coming home on Monday with assignments and new vocabulary words and definitions.  

Week of April 30-May 4

Graded Work will come home on Monday to look over with a parent.  Any "sign and return" papers should be returned on Tuesday.

A Homework Sheet is coming home with Monday's Homework paper. 

Since we read "The Story of the Statue of Liberty" in homeroom to prepare for Ellis Island Day, we are skipping this story in reading class.  This week's story is "The Butterfly Seeds", pages 316-331.  

Week of April 23-27

Graded papers are being sent home on Monday.  After an adult looks over them, "sign and return" papers should be signed and returned to school on Tuesday.

A Homework paper is coming home with vocabulary words and meanings: plantation, fretted, settlement, and celebrate.  Other words to go over include: glittery, weary, loaned, stable, carpenters, and sums.  

For Homework students will be given a crossword puzzle to complete using this week's story.  This paper will be due on Wednesday (No Coupons Allowed).  

Week of April 16-20

Graded Work is coming home on Monday to look over with a parent.  Any "sign and return" papers are due back on Tuesday.

A Homework Sheet is coming home on Monday with assignments for the week.  Vocabulary words and definitions are on the bottom of the sheet. These words are from the story "New Hope": recycling, ferried, brisk, bustling, invitation, and citizens.  Other words of importance are plains, adopted, doe, shed, ferry, fabric, and leather.

Week of April 10-13

Graded Work is coming home on Tuesday.  After reviewing it, any "sign and return" papers should be sent back on Wednesday.

This week's story is "Brave as a Mountain Lion", pages 212-243.  Students need to read and discuss the story at home, and go over any new vocabulary words and meanings.  

Week of April 2-5

Graded Work is coming home to review with a parent.  Any "sign and return" papers should be returned on Tuesday.

Due to a short week, the students will not have a new story in their reader.

The students will be taking their Unit 5 Test this week.

On Monday the students will be given a homework paper to complete.  It is a crossword puzzle for Unit 5 words.  On the back is a word search, and that side is optional.  However, the answers for the crossword puzzle are on the bottom of the word search side.

Week of March 26-30

This week we are skipping the Martin Luther King story, since we read a book about him to our classes, took a test, and did a project for it.  However, we still need to go over the vocabulary for the Martin Luther King story.  Monday's homework is to complete the Vocabulary Activity paper, and return it on Tuesday (No Coupons).

Week of March 19-23

No Graded Work is coming home this week, due to no reading classes the week before spring break.

A Homework Sheet is coming home with new vocabulary words and assignments.

The Homework Paper this week is a crossword puzzle, and students need to find the answers in the reader.  The back is a seek and find puzzle.  It is not necessary to do that side.  The paper is due on Wednesday and no coupons are allowed.

This week's story is "The Hole in the Dike", pages 160-173.  Read it each night and discuss it with someone.

Week of March 5-9

The students will not have reading classes this week.  This is due to the fact that extra time is needed to film the Ellis Island family videos.  On Monday I will give the students their Graded Work from last week.  If they have any "sign and return" papers, they should be returned on Tuesday.   

Week of February 27-March 2

The Graded Work will be coming home on Monday to look over.  Any "sign and return" papers are due back on Tuesday.  Last week the students took two tests.  One was over the story in the reader and the other one was a Unit Test.  Since the Unit Test is a story they've never seen and read before, it shows their ability to use the skills learned to read and show understanding of new material.

Week of February 20-24

Graded work will be coming home on Monday.  Students should look over it with their parents.  Any "sign and return" papers are due back on Tuesday.  

A Homework Sheet is also being sent on Monday.  It explains that the homework paper coming home should be completed on the front with the reader and in complete sentences.  The back includes analogies, which we worked on last week in our workbook.  This paper is due on Thursday.

Week of February 13-17

Students will get Graded Work on Monday.  They should go over it with parents, and return any "sign and return" papers on Tuesday.

Students will receive a Homework Sheet on Monday and a paper to complete using their reader. Students may not use any word twice and page numbers for answers are required, as explained in the directions on the paper.  This paper is due on Wednesday.

Students should read, reread, and discuss "Why Did the Dinosaurs Disappear?", pages 64-77. 

Week of February 6-9

Monday Graded Work is coming home to look over carefully with a Parent.  Any Sign and Return papers are due back on Tuesday.  

A Homework Sheet is also coming home on Monday.

This week's story is "Dinosaur Fossils", pages 46-59.  Students need to read and discuss this story at home and go over the vocabulary words and their meanings.  

Week of January 30-February 3

Last Friday we began the story of the "Dinosaur Who Lived in my Backyard", pages 30-37.  The Test this week will be on Wednesday.  The Vocabulary words and definitions on the bottom of the Homework Sheet are: hatched, neighborhood, swamp, and rescue.

On the Vocabulary Activity paper the other word of importance is sprinkler. 

Week of January 23-27

Graded work will come home on Monday to look over, and any "sign and return" papers should come back on Tuesday.

This week in Reading we will begin Unit 4 and the students will have a new Reader.

The Unit 4 Theme is Fossils.  This week's story is Expository Text, "Fossils Tell of Long Ago", pages 14-27.  The students need to go over the story in their text and the vocabulary that is on the Homework Sheet.  

Week of January 17-20

This week's story is "Animal Camouflage", pages 334-357.  The vocabulary words on the homework sheet are costume, surroundings, blends, mimicry, and pretenders.  Other words to discuss are enemies, patches, match, fawn, marshes, and sways.  

The Test over the story and vocabulary will be on Thursday.

Homework this week includes the Sack Puppet and Written Book Report.  It is due on Wednesday.  The students will also have a crossword puzzle for the story that will be due on Thursday.

Week of January 9-13

Remember every Monday graded work comes home.  Please look over the papers with your child and send back any "sign and return" papers.  

This week's story is "How the Guinea Fowl Got Her Spots", pages 314-331.  Students will be discussing drawing conclusions, classifying, categorizing, and suffixes.  

The vocabulary words on the Homework Sheet are glossy, delicious, slinking, scrambled, and cautiously.  Other words to discuss are startled, reeds, temper, admired, gratefully, delicate, match, and sleek.

Week of January 3-6

Reading this week will include reading and discussing "How to Hide an Octopus and Other Sea Creatures", pages 296-311. Students will discuss vocabulary, rhyming fiction, suffixes, fact and opinion, and author's purpose.

Homework the next couple of weeks includes a Sack Puppet and Written Book Report. The students may use a book they've already read or one they are reading right now.  

Week of December 12-16

The story this week is fiction, "Hungry Little Hare", pages 268-291.  Students will go over new vocabulary (hare, disguise, scent, disappear, sneaky, avoid, meadow, pond, stump, slender, drowsy, barely, tender).

The homework assignment is a crossword puzzle on one side and comprehension questions over the story on the other side.  The paper is due on Wednesday. 

The Test is on Thursday.  There is no Decodable this week.

Please look over graded work on Monday, and return any sign and return papers.
