We explored the animals of the arctic and how they stay warm. We learned whales are mammals, breath air through their blowhole and have a fat layer called blubber to keep them warm in the water. We learned penguins are birds with beaks, feathers, short powerful wings and lay eggs. We had arctic animal water play with ice in the classroom. We talked about clothing we wear to stay warm and named pairs of items such as, shoes, socks, pants, hands and eyes...
We are learning about the season winter and the science of cold and snow. We are working hard to remember clouds contain moisture that can fall as rain or snow. We have sorted small, medium and large circles and learned the order in which to build a "stable" snowman. We will look at how animals live in cold climates and learn facts about bears, seals, whales and also penguins. Our fun science discoveries will involve blubber, frost and ice.
My 4 sides are all the same. Sammy Square that's my name!
January: White and Star
Science
Our winter garden of beans, carrots, radishes, lettuce, parsley and one apple sapling are growing well in this mild weather. We will be learning about winter weather and snow until "Cowboy Week" at the end of January.
We are estimating the number of candy corn in a container. We are rolling the die, identifying the number and then adding that number of teeth to our Jack 'O Lantern.
Science
We have discovered differences between the spider and the insect and learned that spiders are good but not to be handled. We have examined a beaver damaged tree trunk and learned about beaver teeth. We will continue to learn about the pumpkin life cycle and bat characteristics. We will plant our "Dragon Beans" to grow in the PK Garden.
We counted people and apples. We are learning the differences between round items, circles and spheres! Our poem is “Circle, round and round and round I go. I look like a ball but I’m circle Joe!”
Science
We have compared different types and colors of apples. We tasted Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith and graphed our preferences. We learned apples grow from seeds and tracked an apples development from flower to a ripe apple. We will sprout apple seeds soon and begin the 5 senses.
