7th grade English: Syllabus
Syllabus: English Grammar 2011-2012
Ms. McCoy Room: 206
Monday and Friday: 45 min. classes
Tuesday/Thursday: 90 min. classes
Wednesday: 30 min. classes Mass Day
The rules of my classroom adhere to the Love and Logic principles and philosophies. They are posted in the room for your convenience and are the following:
- I will treat you with respect, so you will know how to treat me.
- If you cause a problem, I will ask you to solve it.
- If you cannot solve the problem, or choose not to, I will do something.
- What I do will depend on the special person and special situation.
- If you feel something is unfair, whisper to me, “I’m not sure that is fair,” and we will talk.
Please keep in mind that the rules of St. Andrew’s School, listed in the Student Handbook, also apply to my classroom. Please read and familiarize yourself with them.
- I will post daily objectives on the board for your convenience. It may help you to write them down.
- You will make journal entries quite often. I will provide a quote, thought, and/or idea for you. These entries will be selected at random and graded as part of your participation grade.
- Once roll is taken I will begin the lesson. You will take notes to help you with your homework and study for your quizzes and exams.
- Please keep in mind I will provide class time for practice.
- Questions and class discussion will be held at this time.
- 4. Expect homework in my class. In order to become better readers, writers, and communicators we have to learn and study the grammar and writing of our English language.
- Please answer all questions in complete sentences unless otherwise directed.
- NO late homework will be accepted. If homework is not turned in at the beginning of class it is late and you will receive a zero.
- You will begin homework only when it is assigned to you. If homework is begun and/or completed before it is assigned to you it will be taken up. If this is done repeatedly a zero will be given.
- Your parents may request work the third day you are absent.
- You will be given one day for every missed day to make up your work.
- You will be expected to turn in previously assigned work the day you return.
- Expect to take your quiz/test the day you return from your absence.
- Above all: You will be responsible for collecting and turning in all assignments on time.

What is Plagiarism and Why is it Important?
In school, we are continuously engaged with other people’s ideas: we read them in texts, hear them in lecture, discuss them in class, and incorporate them into our own writing. As a result, it is very important that we give credit where it is due. Plagiarism is using others’ ideas and words without clearly acknowledging the source of that information. Includes but is not limited to:
- Copying answers from another person’s test
- Copying answers from another person’s homework
- Asking another person for answer’s to homework/test
- Copying information from the internet
- Having another person do your work for you
How Can Students Avoid Plagiarism?
To avoid plagiarism, you must give credit whenever you use:
- Another person’s idea, opinion, or theory;
- Any facts, statistics, graphs, drawings—any pieces of information—that are not common knowledge;
- Quotations of another person’s actual spoken or written words; or
- Paraphrase of another person’s spoken or written words.
