Music Quote

Young people can learn from my example that something can come from nothing. What I have become is the result of my hard efforts.

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809) - Father of the Symphony

Dear Parents,

Here is the information for the costumes for the 4th Grade program, ROCK!.  There is a costume board outside the music room in case you want to look at the costume ideas.  It is hard to put everything “on paper”, so a picture might be of assistance.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  A great source is the internet – check costume sites; that has been a great help to many parents.  Thrift stores/goodwill is also an excellent place to look.  If you are a seamstress, the patterns below might be your first choice.  Whatever you decide to do,  I appreciate your help in providing these costumes.  They will MAKE the program!

CAVEMAN/CAVEWOMAN

Simplicity 2518 (easy sew) – adult sizes

         McCalls 2895 (v.C) – adult sizes

There is no “child” pattern for this costume, but you might be able to look at this to get the idea for the costume.  Use the animal prints such as leopard, tiger, etc. – barefoot or simple brown leather sandals – “bones” in the girls’ hair, clubs for the boys to carry, etc.

ROCK & ROLL – LOTS of choices for this group!

Simplicity 5401 (easy sew), Simplicity 3836

         McCalls M6101, M6234, M6384

Girls – You have a wide choice for the 50’s look.  Poodle skirts, white tops, scarves at the neck, white socks, saddle shoes/loafers, twinset, straight skirt with no socks and plain slip-on flats – the patterns will give you a good idea.  Also, there is a booth at the Mercantile on the Weatherford Traffic Circle that carries poodle skirts.  Check it out!

Boys – straight leg jeans, white T-shirt, plain leather jacket or a letter jacket (maybe your Dad has one from high school!), loafers, white socks, or the “clean cut look” with a solid color or white shirt (button down collar), dark “dress pants” and loafers.

ELVIS – No current pattern in the pattern books at the fabric stores.

In the 50’s, Elvis started out with a very clean-cut look.  It was only later that he wore the elaborate “jumpsuits”.  However, I will let you decide how you want to imitate the “King of Rock and Roll”, but you should talk to the other guys and dress the same way if possible.

BEATLES

The “Fab Four” wore plain, dark suits in the early days, so you need a plain dark blue, gray, or black suit with a white shirt and a narrow matching dark, solid colored tie.  IF you can find a wig, the long hair of those early days would really be great if your hair doesn’t have the “Beatle” look.  Three of you will need an electric guitar and one will be at the drums, but we will ask around for help with those items.  Dark lace up dress shoes – not chunky ones.

ED SULLIVAN

Ed always wore a tux or a dark suit with a white shirt and tie.  Dark dress shoes and socks – pretty basic!

BEATLES’ TEEN FANS

This group was still pretty conservative in dress when the Beatles first were popular.  The dress would be a skirt (below the knees – not mini) with a twin set or a blouse and neck scarf, but not the poodle skirts.  Ballet slippers would be the shoe choice or a plain flat-heeled shoe.

HIPPIES

         Simplicity 2689 – tunic with belt/dress

         McCalls M5135

You are the Woodstock flower children.  Peace, man!  Think tie-dyed T-shirts, bell-bottomed jeans, flowers, fringed vests, long hair, peace symbols, etc.  The time introduced the mini-dress, but remember, girls, you will be UP on stage and need to think carefully about how short to make that dress!  Bright colors were “in”, but so was an awareness of nature.

GODFATHER OF SOUL – No current pattern available

James Brown, as Elvis, wore pants and plaid sport coats with a tie in the early years.  He did present a flamboyant picture, so the “Elvis jumpsuit” would also work for him if you can find one!

BACK-UP SINGERS

         Butterick 4385 – v. ab
I also have a pattern in the music room that would work.

These ladies were always WELL DRESSED!  They always dressed alike.  Try to have the same or similar dresses if possible.  They used shiny fabrics such as satin, but a polished cotton would be fine.  Hair should be in a “bouffant”style – think BIG hair!  White or black heels, just not too high since we want you to be able to walk in them!

WILMA, NORMAN, BRAINY STUDENT

Wilma and Norman are the up-tight parents of the 60’s.  You need to dress conservatively compared to the flower children.  Think along the lines of country “bumpkins” just off the farm or a “nerdy” parent charicature.  Nothing bright and colorful, but fairly sedate.  Brainy student – wear your clean, neatly pressed SAS uniform with a “starchy” look to be the complete opposite of the hippies.  Have several books/notebooks to carry.

BEACH SCENE – FRANKIE/ANNETTE

This might be the easiest one of all since you have shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops, etc.  Please remember this is the late 50’s and try to stay true to the period.  Girls – knee length terry cloth beach cover-up (NO bathing suits), a short set but no short-shorts (school dress code), pedal pushers (knee length Capri pants), etc.  The colors should be bright and fun.

Boys – use a Hawaiian type print shirt with knee length shorts and plain sandals or you may be barefoot.  You may bring a skateboard for your surfboard.  Props should include hula hoops, beach balls, sand pails, etc.  The song only lasts 2 minutes so don’t go overboard!

DISCO

John Travolta move over!  “Saturday Night Fever” reigns for this group.  The white suit with a brightly colored shirt for the guys is perfect.  Girls – Glittery tops with pants or skirts, mini dress (be aware of length since you are on the stage).  You were dressed up somewhat for a night on the town.  I have a couple of patterns in the music room that might be a good choice for your outfit.
